It was a dark, gloomy night on Friday, October 25th. However, it wasn’t so gloomy inside the Dobbs Ferry Middle School Commons! That night, the Dobbs Ferry Middle School hosted a Halloween dance that was sure to chill your bones. Tickets were priced at five dollars at the door, three dollars if one paid in advance during Middle School lunch periods.
The Middle School Halloween Dance has been happening for four years, and each year, there are about eight volunteers who help set up the dance. Sixth Grade Science Teacher Mr. Mike Hanley organizes the dance along with the DFMS student government. They do three dances a year, the Valentines day dance, the Halloween dance, and the Spring dance.
With loud music exploding out the speakers, a group of 6th, 7th, and 8th graders were party rocking in some pretty scary costumes! We saw some dark angels, creepy dolls, Mabel from Gravity Falls, and even more. “I think a lot of people put a lot of thought into their costumes,” says Joshua Austrian. “They were all very nice.”
Once everyone had arrived, and had warmed up their dancing skills, something exciting happened…
The dance off! All the girls lined up on one side of the cafeteria, and the boys on the other. Two girls and two boys were to walk out into the space the children had cleared, and flash out their best dance moves. After some time of observing the dancing, the DJ decided that the girls had won this one. “I definitely think the girls should’ve won. The boys were just being silly, but the girls put a lot of effort into their dancing,” says Angelia Vidal.
Sometime that night, DFMS Principal Mr. Mussolini and the rest of the kids took some selfies. With everyone crowded up trying to get into the camera, Mr. Mussolini took a couple pictures. He also went around the dance taking pictures of all the costumes.
The Middle School Halloween Dance is a bright, lively dance that the Middle Schoolers have appeared to enjoy for the past four years. “Personally, I had a lot of fun at the dance, and I got to see my friends. I wish the dance had had a larger turnout and that more kids had come, but all in all, it was a great party,” says Joshua Austrian.
