On March 8th, the Harlem Wizards took on Dobbs Ferry Dunkers once again. They dunked, hit three pointers, and danced. As the Harlem Wizards put it, it is a “Broadway show on a basketball court.”
The Harlem Wizards have been coming to Dobbs Ferry for years, and they still had the same energy. The Harlem Wizards were represented by the “Empire Unit,” which featured players such as “Roadrunner,” “Jumping Jack,” “Airtime,” “Giant,” “Sarge,” and “Big J.”
The Dobbs Ferry Dunkers featured teachers and parents from both schools. Some players included Mr. Mussolini, the principal of Dobbs Ferry Middle School, and Dr. Park, a teacher at Dobbs Ferry Middle School.
In the second quarter, “Giant” turned into MC Hammer and did a dance solo. “Airtime” definitely had airtime, for he dunked a ton throughout the game. In the third, all of the Wizards participated in a huge alley-oop.
The event was a fun-filled evening for all. Besides the exciting action of the game itself, events during halftime or during the middle of the game took place. For example, at halftime, six kids were selected to play basketball musical chairs. The rules were, you had to dribble down to the hoop, and if you made a shot you could go back to half court and sit in a chair. Eventually, all the players were eliminated except for one.
The PTSA raised $17,000 for school purposes, and besides ticket sales, Dobbs raised money with concessions, a 50/50 raffle, and Harlem Wizards merch. Before the start of the game, “Whiz Kids” were invited onto the court to warm up. To be a Whiz Kid, you had to pay for a special Whiz Kid jersey, which allowed you on the pregame court. Ages ranged from 6 to 12 year olds.
The Dobbs Ferry Dunkers ended up losing the game (again), and as a Dobbs Ferry sixth grader puts it, “It was fun, and entertaining.”
