Halloween is filled with candy and costumes, lollipops, peanut butter cups, Snickers, and even full sized candy bars! What did you do with your candy? Some people eat all of their candy in one night. Some people save it. And some people donate it. Do you know what happens to the candy when you donate it? Here at Dobbs Ferry Middle School it went to Ms. Tobey and the Student Government to send to Operation Shoebox.
Operation Shoebox assembles care packages filled with socks, toothpaste, and candy to send to American soldiers abroad. Social Studies teacher Nicole Tobey organizes our school’s participation in Operation Shoebox. The idea came from brainstorming sessions between Ms. Tobey and her Student Government students. Below is an interview with Ms. Tobey:
Who do you deliver the candy to?
The candy is donated to Operation Shoebox. They then take the candy and package it up and send it to troops overseas.
How much candy did you raise last year?
I’m not sure how much we raised last year, but we only ran the drive for two days. But this year, we tripled the amount of candy we collected.
How much candy do you think you’re going to raise this year?
We raised at least triple the amount than last year. We ran the drive three days longer and students were able to drop off candy at Springhurst.
When does the candy drive end?
The candy drive ended November 8. And we hope to pack up the candy this week and mail it out.
Was this your idea, or something that has been continued from previous years?
This was an idea that came from brainstorming with my student council members.
The DFMS candy drive is a great place to donate your candy and to show your appreciation for the military. Next year they hope to raise even more candy!
