The first book in the Sweet Valley Twins series by Francine Pascal called Best Friends is about two twin girls, Elizabeth and Jessica Wakefield, who are very different in their own ways but similar in others. Jessica and Elizabeth are inseparable, but they have to remember that they are not the same person and can not always be together forever.
On the first day of middle school, Elizabeth is ready to start off the new year with her best friend, Jessica, but Jessica has other ideas. Jessica starts acting very differently from how she normally acts and starts hanging out with other girls. Elizabeth does not like it, but doesn’t hate them until her sister does unspeakable things just to look cool and even pretends to be Elizabeth for one of her schemes.
I once had a friend who I did everything with, and I really enjoyed being around. Of course the connection was not as strong because we weren’t siblings or twins for that matter, but it didn’t matter to me. After the summer, she changed. She didn’t want to be with me after a new girl came to our school. But because I had other friends, I was not as sad as Elizabeth must have been. After all, she centered everything around Jessica, but sadly, Jessica didn’t do the same back. Just like Elizabeth, I made other close friends and I now have another best friend who I trust completely and would do almost anything for.
I think Pascal pinned her exact target of making a work of art that describes something that happens to many friendships and that weakens many siblings relationships. Relationship drama. It is a very relatable book that makes you feel many different emotions at the same time.
In this book, it kind of makes Jessica look like the bad guy the entire time, but she still loved her sister all the same and just wanted to make new friends. Although Jessica made some bad decisions, she just wanted to fit in. Even if it is not right, many people have the exact same mindset. Everyone has been in this situation at one point or another. This book was awesome. I highly recommend it and I give it 4.3 stars.
