This February was Black History Month, and with it was the Black History celebration. Staff member Mrs. Tsha Gregory was the main director of the celebration, performed in the DFHS auditorium.
Some of the performers included the Heritage Choir (which include many of our DFMS teachers, such as Ms. Battersby, Ms. Colon, Ms. Ducic, and Ms. Leon), the Dobbs Ferry Stepping Eagles, as well as two solo performances; Aiyana Walker performed a piano piece along with singing, and Elijah Hubbard performed a Michael Jackson dance to the song ‘Billie Jean” which included the famous Moonwalk. Also, prizes were given out for the correct answers to the Who Am I? questions. The grand finale was a performance done by the Bokendeye African Dance Theater, complete with African drummers and dancers. The final performance also included a Girls vs. Boys dance showdown.
“I think it was really nice,” says sixth grader Tiko Mkheidze. ”My favorite part was the dance competition. The way they danced was kind of funny.” Sixth grader Alisha Pandya agreed. “I liked the whole celebration overall! It was interesting that they brought a professional dance group, and how they had a dance-off! The Michael Jackson dancer was interesting as were the Stepping Eagles. It was fun to watch the different people show off their unique but amazing talents.”
Black History Month is celebrated to honor the rich history of African Americans, and also to rejoice their freedom. The Black History Celebration indulged the fact that African Americans are proud of their heritage, and have no reason not to be. The celebration was not only an entertaining performance, but an important tribute to the past and rich history of African Americans.
